What Footwear Does My Child Really Need for Winter?
What Footwear Does My Child Really Need for Winter?
Snow boots? Waterproof boots? Warm sneakers? Let's figure out what your child actually needs.
OK, let's start with where you live.
If you live somewhere that gets plenty of snow every winter think Vermont or New Hampshirei. It's a no-brainer. Your child needs a good, high snow boot. We love Bogs and Sorel for keeping little feet warm and dry through those snowy winters.
But what if you live in the NYC metro area or the tri-state area?
Well, that's where things get a little tricky.
You want to be prepared for winter, but you don't necessarily want to spend money on a big, stiff snow boot that your child may, or may not ever wear.
At Runnin' Wild Kids, we have a few ideas!
Let's Talk About a Typical NYC Winter
We might not get 10 inches of snow, but you can pretty much count on a few things:
-
It will be cold.
-
It will be rainy.
-
Any snow we do get will probably turn into a slushy mess within a day, if not hours.
-
There will be puddles where puddles have absolutely no business being!
And your child still needs to get to school, play in the park, and enjoy being outside.
So what do we recommend?
Think Beyond the Traditional Snow Boot
There are some terrific winter boots that are much more flexible than a traditional high snow boot.
Think shorter boots—ankle height or a little higher—that are warm, comfortable, and either waterproof or water-resistant.
The best part? Your child can actually wear them every day.
Heading to the park, but the ground is wet? No problem. Cold morning with puddles everywhere? You're covered with the right footwear.
With the right footwear, there's no reason to be afraid of a little winter weather. Get outside and let them play!
And here's what we especially love about these boots: They're money well spent because your child will actually wear them and like wearing them.
Waterproof or Water-Resistant? There's a Difference!
Here's something parents should know when choosing winter footwear.
Waterproof means the boot is designed to keep water from getting through, making it the better choice for rainy days, slushy sidewalks, and those unavoidable puddles.
Water-resistant means the boot can handle some moisture, like light rain or damp ground, but it isn't designed for prolonged exposure to water or serious puddle jumping.
Both can be great choices! It really comes down to how and where your child will be wearing them.
And remember, waterproof doesn't necessarily mean warm. Some waterproof boots aren't insulated, so a good wool sock can make a big difference on colder days.
Our Favorites for Toddlers and Little Kids

Jan & Jul Insulated Ankle Boots
Warm, comfortable, and a great everyday option for those cold, wet winter days.
A newer favorite at Runnin' Wild Kids, and they've been HOT! A great option for little ones who need a practical winter boot without all the bulk.
A longtime favorite of ours! This boot is fully waterproof but not insulated. Pair it with a good wool sock on colder days, and you've got a terrific winter combination.
Here's another reason we love the Canyon: it's so comfortable that your child can wear it right through the school day without having to change into another pair of shoes.
That's a win for everyone!
What About the Older Kids?
Well, older kids are a little tougher.
Let's face it. Some of them would happily wear their sneakers through a snowstorm!
But we have a few suggestions anyway.
We love these. They look cool, they're warm, and they're waterproof. A great combination for kids who care just as much about how their shoes look as how they feel.
Another great winter option worth considering for active kids.
Bogs Waterproof High-Top Sneakers
For the kids who really don't want to wear boots, these are a terrific alternative. They have that sneaker feel with the added protection you want during wet winter weather.
We also love many of Keen's lower-cut waterproof styles. They're practical, comfortable, and great for kids who are always on the move.
Don't Forget the Rest of Their Outfit!
The right shoes are important, but if things get really messy out there, pair them with a good pair of waterproof pants/overalls.
A little rain, slush, or mud shouldn't mean staying inside all day.
We believe kids should be outside playing, exploring, and having fun—even in the winter. They just need to be dressed for it!
Still Not Sure What Your Child Needs?
That's what we're here for.
At Runnin' Wild Kids, we don't believe every child needs the same shoe or boot. It depends on where you live, how your child plays, and, of course, what fits their feet comfortably.
